Question by Tashiness: Looking for a good prenatal work out?
I’m looking for a good prenatal work out that won’t leave me exhuasted, preferably something like yoga or an easy pilates DVD because I do not have the energy or the stomach to do any high impact exercises. Please let me know what you liked or didn’t like about the exercises you did. Thanks a bunch!

Both Denise Austin and Leslie Sansone have low impact, pregnancy workouts. My clinic recommends them both. Don’t know about Yoga or pilates. Neither is an aerobic workout which is what is still recommended.

How long should I do my pilates work out?

I am 5’2 and weigh 127 pounds. I want to lose between 10-15pounds in time for the summer. I walk at 3 miles per hour on the treadmill for 20-40 minutes everyday and I do pilates for around 15 minutes. Should I do pilates longer?

My advice – and it’s only advice – you should up the intensity a bit on the treadmill by increasing the incline a bit. I was told by a personal trainer that working at a slightly slower pace but steeper incline does sometimes help to burn more calories. I did notice I sweat more during those workouts. Or – do that every other day, just to change it up.

As for pilates, it depends on what exactly you are doing for pilates. Pilates is great and you can get a workout in only 15 minutes, but you have to be doing the absolute best exercises and really focusing on them. Let me know what you are doing and I can easily give you more information! Most of my pilates clients either need a variation to make their workout more challenging! Fitness & Pilates -The Truth About Pilates And Weight Loss, Does It Really Work? Core Exercises And How They Can Help You?

 

There is a lot of misunderstanding about Pilates and core stability ball exercises ,I get asked lots of questions but the most common one is…’Will Pilates help me lose weight?’

The truth is Pilates is designed to tone and shape your muscles, it is not designed to burn of fat.

If you are over weight you will need a cardiovascular workout. This type of workout is more active and combined together with a good food plan you will start to lose weight quickly.

If you haven’t done any cardio work before I suggest you just start of with a cardio exercises for beginners its not going to be easy when you first start out but if you stick with it you’ll see some fantastic results very quickly.

When I talk about food plans I say ‘Food Plan’ because I hate the word ‘Diet.’

Diet to me means going without what I like and trying to stop eating. You don’t stop eating and you don’t go without you just need to eat the right foods to help you lose weight.

Now, if you do a cardiovascular workout one day and then have a rest day to let your body recuperate you can then do a workout using a Pilates core exercise ball. By alternating your workout routine in this way, you will help to tone your muscles which will start to pull your body into shape and by combining the two different work-outs and having a good food plan you will see a dramatic change in your body very quickly and also lose the weight. 

I want to talk about is the ‘Core and Core exercises ‘… Everybody asks me ‘what is the ‘Core’ and what does it mean?

If you could stand upright and straight and draw a straight line through your body from the tip of your head down through the centre of your neck, spine, pelvis and then straight down to the ground, dividing your body exactly in half then this is what they call your centre line.. You’re Core.

Your Core is kept upright and stable by your ‘Core stability muscles’, which include deep abdominal, back and pelvic floor muscles.

Now if your Core stays in line and straight you will stand upright and tall with no back, neck pains or any problems.

However, in the real world it is not like that and people in today’s society suffer from injures, over weight, and illnesses which can all throw your Core out of alignment coursing you more ailments and discomfort. Some people don’t even have any injures but over time they have started to lean more to one side this then starts to throw their body out of alignment.

With your Core out of alignment your stability muscles start to do there own thing to try and help you keep upright. They end up working unevenly, for instance.. if you put more weight on the right foot because you lean to the right you will put an extreme amount of pressure on the Core muscles and they start to form there own shape to help them perform as best as they can under these circumstances.

This can then cause other problems and lots of unnecessary pain or discomfort.

With Pilates exercises carried out correctly it helps stretch the body and reshape your muscles helping you to realign your Core, intern returning your body to an upright and straight position.

How to Do Free Pilate Work Outs

Pilate work outs are safe and effective. Even a beginner can start doing these exercises. Pilate’s system focuses on increasing flexibility and strength. Some of the free Pilate work outs are as follows:

1. Overhead leg Handstand; Start by lying face up and then bring your legs up to a 45 degree angle. Then slowly bring them behind your head and then stabilize your arms. Now bring your legs to the middle and extend your lower body.

2. Roll out: Back stretch; Lie on your stomach in the exercise mat. Start in a ball position with arms in the ground. Your knees and chest must touch the floor. Then stretch your back and then return to the starting position. You must remember to do this exercise very slowly.

3. One leg raises; Lie on your back. Start by raising one of your legs. Raise it straight over the body in ninety degrees. Then lower your leg. Ensure that your leg did not touch the floor. Return to the starting position. You can also raise the leg and try to roll in circles. This will help activating your oblique.

4. Bicycle kick; Lie on your back. Start raising your leg on 45 degrees. Now bring the other leg in tight to your body. Then hold your knee with your hands. Slightly twist the knees in either side. If you area an advanced exerciser, then you can make it somewhat difficult by raising knee tight to the chest. You can do this up to the count of two.

5. Open leg Roll over; Lie on your back and the raise both of legs up to 45 degrees. Then tighten your abs and then raise the legs behind your head. Open your legs and then return to the starting position. This is slightly difficult to perform and hence you can avoid this if you area a beginner.

6. Double leg Roll over; this exercise is similar to the above. But start doing this in a sitting position. Then raise your legs while balancing your burn. It must be in V shape. Then lower your torso and roll back to the balanced position. This is very difficult to perform. However this can be done by practice.

7. Leg kicks; Take pike position. Start by twisting the legs slightly. Then bring your leg behind your body. Then bring it to forward. This exercise can be done in number of different ways. You can make circles or you can avoid using straight legs.

Free Pilate exercise can be done in number of ways. A single leg stretch exercise is very easy to perform. A beginner can also do this. Pilate’s relaxation exercises can be practiced by athletes and dancers. This will help to get quick relaxation. This will also help to get posture improvement. This will require no stress like conventional work outs. While doing these relaxation exercises, concentrate on breathing in and out. Proper breathing will surely help in leading a healthy life. Isn’t it?
